Jay began his training under Roberto Maia in 1999 and received his black belt in 2008. In that time at Gracie Barra Boston, he trained with BJJ notables: Carlos Gracie Jr., Marcio Feitosa, Braulio Estima, Daniel Gracie, Roberto "Tussa" Alencar, Roberto "Gordo" Correia, Leo Vieira, as well as Boston home grown talents: Kenny Florian, Keith Florian, Nate Ryan, Pat Barbieri, Chris Page, Marlon Xavier, Mike Pellegrino, Chris Owen, Tadashi Takashima, and last but not tallest, Steve Medina. Jay has won various bjj tournaments including: 2x Pan Am medalist, 2x NAGA champion, 2x Copa Atlantica champion, and many others.
